ILOILO CITY - As the country marks the 121st death anniversary of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, Hon. Jose Espinosa III, Iloilo City Mayor, led the wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal in Plaza Libertad, Iloilo City on December 30, 2017.
According to Mayor Espinosa, Rizal was an embodiment of what a Filipino is and will be, “Rizal made a supreme sacrifice of giving his life,” said the mayor.
Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne R. Binag, Regional Director of PRO 6, distinguished speaker of the said ceremony quoted Rizal's most popular saying " The youth is the hope of our Motherland", however he stressed that, "We cannot let our youth navigate the road to positive change all by themselves, older generation must set examples and share their wisdom that culled from years of experience and learning from their mistakes, so that they can show a better road to the younger generations, thus, a well-guided youth is the hope of our motherland!"
A cultural presentation by the Iloilo Prima Galaw Productions portraying the life story of the national hero highlighted the ceremony. The ceremony commenced with the releasing of the yellow and blue balloons symbolizing the freedom of the city against drugs.
Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon , DILG R VI Asst. Regional Director Maria Calpiza J. Sardua, LGU, PNP and school officials, and representatives from Girl and Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Veterans Federation of the Philippines, and Senior Citizens’ Organization, among others, graced the ceremony as well.
